Referees

YMCA Background Check Paperwork
First of all I need to get your paperwork turned in if you haven’t already done so. I have attached the documents needed. This paperwork is required for the YMCA to place you on their payroll and complete a criminal background check. This is important due to the fact that we will be working directly with kids. Do not worry about the driving and credit checks; these will not be completed because they are irrelevant to refereeing. If you haven’t already done so, please complete the documents and email, fax, mail or deliver them to The Hoop ASAP.

Oregon West League Info:

Games played on Monday or Wednesday evenings starting December 8th and running through February.

Expectations for all referees:
1. Referees are expected to be on the court and ready to work 10 minutes prior to their first game.

2. Referees are expected to wear black shoes, socks, shorts and striped shirt (tucked in at all times)

3. Referees are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner always keeping safety as the #1 priority.

4. Referees are expected to hustle at all times to ensure they are in a position to make the correct call.

5. Referees are expected to place final scores on the game sheets at the conclusion of each game.

6. Referees are not allowed to speak on The Hoop’s behalf about consequences that extend further than the game currently being officiated.

7. Referees are expected to eat only between games or at half time.

Bad Behavior from coaches or players:
In general it is my preference that you (as an official) ignore the petty stuff and T anything that is inappropriate. Referees that allow too much garbage from coaches and players make it harder for those who keep everyone in check. Moving forward I am asking all officials to uphold a strict sportsmanship standard and keep coaches and players in line at all times.

Bad behavior from spectators:
Spectators- As a rule, ignore them. If they hinder the game or create an atmosphere that interferes with the game in any way beyond annoying you, stop the game and ask them to leave the court. If they refuse, have a staff person at the front desk deal with them and continue the game as normal. There should never be any dialogue taking place between a game official and an out of line spectator other than this.

Summery
I trust your judgment as a referee. I understand we all miss or make bad calls once in a while. I am not worried about that. If a coach contacts me to complain about a call(s) I will hear him out and then back you up fully. I want The Hoop to be a fun place to work and play. I believe if we hold the line with these expectations it will be. If you have any questions or concerns about any of the above information don’t hesitate to call me directly on my cell at (503) 504-7977.

Thank you for your hard work and I look forward to an enjoyable season.
